About Us

The Division of General Internal Medicine & Primary Care, the largest division within the Department of Medicine and the UC Irvine Health School of Medicine, is the academic home to nearly 60 faculty members, many of whom are nationally and internationally recognized experts in their disciplines. All are dedicated to providing superior clinical training and the best patient care.

These highly engaged physicians, who form a substantial number of the medical school's core faculty, are leaders in primary care and hospital medicine, palliative care, geriatrics, health policy research, medical ethics and health outcomes research.

Division faculty members are driving improvements in healthcare through major initiatives in executive wellness and weight management, elder care, disease prevention and the business of medicine. Many are innovators in medical education, developing curricula to advance medical ethics and train UC Irvine medical students and residents to honor patients' spiritual values and improve end-of-life care.

In addition to holding leadership roles within the School of Medicine, the Department of Medicine and UC Irvine Medical Center, division faculty members partner with other departments and schools on joint education initiatives, leading-edge research and patient care efforts.

The division's clinical faculty members not only train future specialists to coordinate the overall care of hospitalized patients, they also are dedicated to ensuring that this care is of the highest quality. Their efforts have placed UC Irvine Medical Center first among University of California hospitals in delivering low mortality and patient readmission rates.

These faculty members practice at the medical center in Orange, which has be ranked among the nation's best hospitals for more than a decade. They also practice at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, as well as at ambulatory care facilities on the Irvine campus and in Orange. This gives the physicians in our division's extremely competitive residency program the broadest possible range of clinical experiences.

At UC Irvine's Division of General Internal Medicine & Primary Care, each faculty member strives to foster innovation, to recruit and to train the finest physicians and ultimately to provide the most comprehensive and compassionate patient care.
