Project CLEAR: Eradicating antibiotic-resistant MRSA

a microscopic view of the MRSA organismIf you or a loved one has MRSA, a "superbug" that is resistant to many antibiotics, please contact us to learn about Project CLEAR,
a clinical trial aimed at preventing infection in people who have MRSA.

Project CLEAR, which stands for Changing Lives by Eradicating Antibiotic Resistance, is designed to prevent infection in patients carrying MRSA who are being discharged from a hospital or are being admitted to a nursing home.

The study is evaluating two methods to reduce MRSA infections:
  • providing expert advice on home hygience practices and cleaning
  • providing expert advice plus special soap and medicine to remove MRSA from the body

MRSA carriers at risk

MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is commonly found in many places, including hospitals, nursing homes, gyms and schools.

Many people carry MRSA bacteria on their bodies without experiencing a problem. But some MRSA carriers can develop serious infections. These infections more commonly develop in carriers who have recently been hospitalized or who already have serious illnesses. Patients with MRSA who have recently been hospitalized have a 25 percent risk of developing an infection within one year of discharge. These infections can lead to hospital readmission.

MRSA study eligibility

To be eligible for the clinical trial, participants must:
  • be at least 18 years of age
  • have been admitted to a hospital in the previous 30 days or discharged to a nursing home
  • have a positive culture for MRSA during a recent hospitalization or within 30 days of admission or after discharge
  • be able to give consent or have a primary caregiver provide consent
  • be able to bathe or shower regularly or have a primary caregiver perform this task
