About Our Research

UC Irvine’s Department of Medicine has more than 300 research protocols spanning the entire spectrum of academic medical pursuits — from atomic level analysis to studies of molecules, cells, tissues, animals and human subjects. The department’s principal investigators were awarded more than $37.5 million in fiscal year 2009-2010 for an array of basic science, clinical and translational research studies.

With 11 specialty divisions — Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine/Primary Care, Hematology/Oncology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and Rheumatology, the Department of Medicine (DOM) and it's more than 230 faculty members are ideally positioned to advance the nation’s multidisciplinary and translational science goals as set forth by the Institute of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Congress.
